To take payments online a direct link with your bank or a third party link with your bank is required. The links required are often reffered to as online payment gateways.

A merchant id can be obtained in one of two ways:

Direct from your bank, after an bank application process. This will then enable you to apply for an online merchant account with numerous online payment gateways.
From a payment gateway themselves. Worldpay offer all users the facility to apply for an merchant id through themselves, This can significantly reduce application times.
